Our upcoming event Queer Poetics
A free workshop event, focused on integrating trans identity and ideas into poetry. Our night will move through an interactive conversation involving queer theory, a guided writing exercise, and an open floor to share our work.
Hello everyone! My name is Rose Lindsey, a gender/queer senior at Seattle University. Throughout the last six months, I have been interning with Hinton Publishing, alongside my excellent co-intern, Nova Teriiteanau Ross. Like her, I’ve been working towards creating a literature event for the broader Seattle community, and I’m thrilled to announce that this month, this event is coming to fruition!
When considering what I wanted to focus on for this project, I found myself drawn immediately towards queer poetry. As a gender/queer poet myself, I have my own history with self-expression and divination through my work. During the last school year, I had the opportunity at Seattle U to take a course focusing on queer poetics with Serena Chopra, and I found myself absolutely alivened and inspired by what we were exploring. I was learning new queer theories to apply to my writing, while also gaining language to describe the poet I had always been. From this, I became compelled to share what I had been learning, and to encourage exploring queerness and poetry within my community. I believe that this exploration can lead to some of the fullest enrichment of our creative selves – for anyone of any identity!
For everyone reading, please consider yourselves personally invited to Queer Poetics, an event in partnership with Hinton Publishing and Common Area Maintenance Seattle! Queer Poetics will be a three-step evening: first, we will have a guided conversation focusing on theory of queerness and transness, and how these theories might become integrated into our work; then, we will follow a writing exercise honed in on these concepts; and we will close out our night with space for sharing of work, for anyone interested. Admission is absolutely free – I only ask that you attend with an open mind. Our event will be on September 23rd, with doors opening at 6:30 and the event beginning at 7. You can find us at 2125 2nd Ave, Seattle WA 98121. Please bring materials with you to work with; all you’ll need is pencil and paper, or a writing tablet. We hope to see you there!
