What we can do to help the survivors of the LA fires
By Maggie Block
I, like I assume all of you, have been watching the unbelievable images coming out of LA as the worst wild fires on record burn down entire communities, feeling terrified and helpless. And while the long term work that needs to be done is building a strong and effective environmental justice movement, there are things we can do to help those effected by the fires.
While I have no ability to guarantee that all the GoFundMe’s are legitimate, surely most of them are. If that makes you nervous there are dedicated organizations and charities that are less likely to be fraudulent.
From anywhere, give money
A spreadsheet with GoFundMe’s for people effected by the Palisades & Eaton Fires
A spreadsheet with GoFundMe’s for displaced Black families
A GoFundMe to support LA’s essential workers
Altadena Girls Fire Recovery, support teen survivors of the fires
Support members of the Altadena community survive until aid comes
In and around Los Angeles, volunteer
A massive spreadsheet filled with places to volunteer and give, and what they need
Foster an animal as shelters are overwhelmed by animals found around the fires
Important information
FEMA’s Common Rumors page has a lot of information about how someone can both accept donations from individuals and get aid from the federal government.
I want to thank Chelsea Devantez for collecting and posting the resources I shared. I highly recommend following her on Instagram, and listening to her podcast.
